Child isn’t allowed to be named ‘4real’

A New Zealand registrar put a stop to the wish of a couple to name their son 4real, because a name is not allowed to have numbers in it.

The parents decided to give their baby that name when they saw it the first time on echo and then it really kicked in, that they were going to have a baby.

The registrar office said that the name isn’t officially refused yet. They are still negotiating with the parents about it, cause rules say that unusual names have to be looked at case by case. If they don’t reach a compromise in time, the boy will be called ‘real’. A child in New Zealand needs to be registered within 2 months.

My thoughts: What I don’t understand that if they can’t call the boy ‘4real’ on paper, why they don’t turn the official documented name into ‘forreal’ or ‘fourreal’ and I think that ‘might’ solve the issue.

  1. Why do parents try and do this to their kids. The parents don’t have to live with these crazy names!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I don’t think that some parents realize the consequences of giving their child ‘weird’ names. And they probably want an ‘original’ name.

  3. [...] Baby ‘4real’ now called Superman Update for Child isn’t allowed to be named ‘4real’. [...]

  4. the consequences? Well if u mean like, classmates making fun of them, then yeah. But the parents could tell the child to be proud that their name isnt Nicole or Matt, because those are very common names. How many people are named Superman or 4real? And I have a feeling there will be a generation with odd crazy names. Im 14 and i have some intresting names that i’d like to use when i grow up for my children, and i think people my age to around 20 years old all have intresting name ideas, so alot of them will have children with ‘diffrent’ names, and so there will be a large generation of oddly named children.

and my rant is done now.

  5. Exactly… that other kids make fun of their name. Or in worse cases being bullied because of their name. And there are more then enough names that are very nice or original instead of common.

You can always choose for an international name or a name composed of a combination of the mother and father’s name.

May I also remind you, that there are rules for giving names and they may vary from country to country. :) So what is not allowed in 1 country may be perfectly legal in another.

  6. There are studies that show that a person’s name can help or hinder them when it comes to finding success. Would a law firm want to have a 4Real working for them? Would a business want a 4Real to represent the company? While it is fairest to give a person a chance to prove themselves, it is still human nature to judge a book by its cover, and people will (unfortunately) be prejudiced against this boy if his legal name is something ridiculous like 4Real.

I understand that parents may want to give their children interesting and unique names, but why not find a name that is a compromise? These parents can find a name that means something like “surprise” or “shock” that sounds cool but also gives their kid a chance at future success. At VERY least, give him a middle name that is “normal” so he can go by that.

  7. I LOVE THIS STORY.
